RIP Air America

I've just read that Air America will be closing down and filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which means that they will be going away, at the young age of almost six years. They lasted a lot longer than the right wing expected them to do. Unfortunately, most of the programs that were any good had moved to other networks; the best programs still survive.
I'm not sure what I'll do with this site. I have more or less neglected it over the past three or four years, as I retired from my day job and went to work in my own business, and was distracted from listening to Air America by spending too much time working and watching my progressive politics on Television. Lately it's only been Ring of Fire once in awhile or the Ron Reagan show, or listening to my local affiliate while working in the yard. Since most of the programs I listened to in the past have moved to other networks, and are still on my local affiliate, I'll probably continue to listen to them; missing the extra stream from AAR.
I suspect what I will do is rebuild the AAL page with links to the remaining progressive programs and streams, and then probably not put much maintenance into the site. Not really much of change.
In the meantime, I still occasionally blog on Dailykos as earwicker23, and have an aromatherapy blog at http://www.aromaconnection.org and you can find me on Facebook and Twitter.

Recipe for America

I just returned from an evening in Seattle at FX McRory's, at a book signing for Jill Richardson's book Recipe for America. Not very many attendees, but Jill will be at several other venues in the Seattle area over the weekend and a review of the book will be featured on DailyKos on Sunday.
I've had my copy of the book for several weeks and it is definitely worth buying and reading if you care about eating and about the sustainability of the world economy (of which America is a major driving part).
McRory's was not a very good venue for a Book Signing, since it is a bar/restaurant and was very noisy. Eventually Jill led us outside onto the sidewalk eating area and talked about the book until the Seattle rain drove us back inside (of course it shouldn't have, as a Seattle Rain isn't really rain by the standards of the rest of the world--but it was a sign to change the venue slightly).

Rachel Maddow Show moves to mornings

In an article entitled Maddow rechannels energy at Air America in the New York Daily News, the mystery of what happened to the Rachel Maddow show when the Ron Reagan Show expanded to three hours is revealed. As I suspected, Rachel has given up her afternoon show on Air America and the former second hour of the show that was being recycled from the evening MSNBC Rachel Maddow show has moved to the early morning: 5 am Eastern/2 am Pacific. Since I am not usually up at 2 am pacific (except sometimes on weekends) I hadn’t been sure what was happening. Since I was rather bored with the recycled segment (having seen it on MSNBC the night before) I was happy to see the Ron Reagan Show expanded.

In other program changes, XM Radio has moved Thom Hartmann to the 6-9 PM Eastern/3-6 PM Pacific Segment, allowing him the full three hours, and expanded Mike Malloy from 2 to three hours in the 9-12 PM Eastern/6-9 Pacific. (America Left, Channel 167) I’m not sure what time RR Show will be on but will find out.

Ron Reagan Show to go to three hours

Ana Marie Cox to become Air America Correspondent

The author provides some criteria that can be used to help make a decision among candidates in the upcoming Presidential election. Although I tend to wonder along with Jon Stewart how there can be anyone left who has not made up their mind, I realize that many people have not yet done so, as is evidenced by the polls. So if you are one of the people who has not yet made up your mind, I urge you to read this essay.

Of course, it's unlikely that you would be reading this if you haven't made up your mind--this blog is not well read and updated only sporadically. I myself, for example, have been obsessing about the election for almost two years, long ago made up my mind what candidate to support, was elected a delegate for that candidate in the local Democratic caucus, and attended the district and county convention. I didn't get elected as a delegate to the State or National conventions because I didn't run.

But if you are reading this, please read the linked article above, think about the issues, make up your mind, and VOTE!

You may have noticed on Olbermann, or on some other blog, reference to the billboard in Florida that advertises The Republican Song, which is about how Americans shouldn't vote for a Democrat. By mistake tonight I typed in the wrong address, and here at www.republicansong.com got something entirely different.

Randi Rhodes moves to NovaM

For the past couple of weeks there has been lots of discussion on progressive radio and progressive radio blogs about the status of Randi Rhodes, who was suspended from Air America after a U-Tube video that showed her using language deemed inappropriate by some circulated on the internet.

This morning it was announced on the Air America site that Randi had quit Air America. An attempt to reach her web site was auto-forwarded back to Air America (thanks Sam). I went to a linked archive site at White Rose and discovered an article on the complete status( wait for the popup), apparently cribbed partially from The Raw Story. In the Raw Story article it was announced that Randi will be moving to NovaM. She will be back on the air in her usual time slot on Monday, April 14.

At this point it's not clear how many stations will carry her, but she will be back on her old station WJMO in Florida, and the San Francisco station she was visiting at the time of her "offense" will be carrying here. I would imagine that the Seattle Station will probably continue to carry her in the evening slot just ahead of Mike Malloy.

We are back - sort of

OK, you can now actually view this blog again at the blogspot site airamericalinks.blogspot.com. I will set an automatic forward from the web site.

Getting this blog to load at the web site has been an ordeal since the Blogger upgrade. I was able to get my other blogspot blogs to load OK, but for some reason this one just doesn't do it. So I decided to host it at blogspot for awhile until I figure out how to get it to go back to the website.

You'll notice a number of posts never before seen on the web--even through they were written months ago and posted.

In the period since this blog broke, there have been lot's of changes at Air America. They went into and cam out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They declared Air America 2.0 and reworked their programming. Al Franken retired and went into politics. Mike Malloy (previously fired) has come back on the air on the NovaM network. Thom Hartman moved into Al Franken's midday slot on Air America and some local stations, but Ed Shultz snuck into that slot on XM Channel 167. Sam Seder moved to a morning slot and then to a Sunday Show. Rachel Maddow emerged as a strong show in the late afternoon/early evening. Lionel got the old Seder morning slot, and the Young Turks had the old early morning slot for a year or so, and then moved back to their own slot and through Brave New Films. Randi Rhodes dropped from four to three hours, and a host of other shows have come and gone--EcoTalk, Laura Flanders during the week, the Air Americans to name a few.

I missed all this on the blog and basically didn't do much with updating the web site. I've been busy with some other blogs, keeping up with politics in general, retiring from my day job to spend more time running our small business, and with dealing with life in general. They say that when you retire you are busier than ever, and that is certainly true in my case.

I'm hoping to spend some time rebuilding the front page of the web site for Air American 2.0 before it becomes Air America 3.0. More about that in a future post. Stay tuned.

OK, I've finally, after a month of being unable to log in to access my blogs on blogger, gotten logged in, so hopefully I'll be blogging again occasionally. The problem is finding the time, particularly since we have started a new aromatherapy blog which takes a lot of time. And there is that thing called life . . .
Not all is well yet and obviously, even though I'm logging in with the new password, this is still in Old Blogger format and didn't upload correctly when I tried it on April 11. It's now the 23rd and trying again.

A two page article in the New York Times covers the current status of the continuing financial travails of Air America. I'm not sure I learned much substance from it, except that apparently the Ed Shultz show is moving to the same slot now occupied by Al Franken and Thom Hartman. It appears it will be a three way ratings war, although probably not in the same markets.

In the long run that would probably cause all three shows to grow, because they are in some ways different types of shows appealing to different audiences. Since my local station time-shifts Al to the afternoon, I've been listening to Thom in the morning, Al at lunch time (the last hour) and then either picking up the early Al at drivetime or listening to the Podcast in the evening. (since I have AM and XM both, as well as an Ipod, I can pretty much do what I want to.

Mike Malloy Back Tonight!

Mike Malloy will be back on the air tonight, according to a post on Huffington Post and an announcement on Mike's Web site.

He'll be streaming on a new Progressive Radio Network NovaM starting at 9:00 pm EST tonight, October 30.
As of this writing, the new network's web site at http://novamradio.com/ doesn't seem to be done yet--I'm getting a link to their development page. Let's hope it will be up on time.

Women's Radio Network Launches

A new Talk Radio Network for Women (Run by Women) has launched and has programming on a few terrestrial stations and the internet. You can check it out at Greenstone Media.

Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda are principles in the new network and Gloria was on Bill Maher last night and announced new network.

Predictably, the right wing (Radio Equalizer, to whom I won't link) has accused them of being another Air America.

On Bill Maher, Steinem emphasized that the new network is not just for women, but expects its programming to appeal to women and men both.

I'll be adding a link to the AARLinks home page.

6-8 PM Rachel Maddow
8-9 PM Politically Direct
9-10 PM Eco-Talk
10 PM- Midnight still up in the air. No replacement for Malloy has yet been selected (how about bringiing Malloy back?)
The Al Franken repeat will move up to Midnight.

This was as of Wednesday. Young Turks, Sam Seder, and Randi Rhodes are confirmed per what I have heard from their mouths or their website.

Status of Air America Radio

Not that I really know much more than you do if you read a lot of blogs. But this is a summary of what I have gleaned over the last few weeks. I'm going to skip the links to stuff because I don't have much time right now; I may update this and fill them in tonight.

A few weeks ago the right blogosphere was rife with rumors that AAR was having financial problems and would finally die. Of course they have been plugging these rumors since the beginning (no one listens, they are broke, etc) so I treated them as the BS they are. These started after Mike Malloy was let go and during the period that AAR was evaluating programming and deciding on the fall lineup.

Then yesterday (Sept 13) there was a post on Think Progress blog that broke the story that AAR was going to restructure and would "declare bankruptcy" on Friday. This brought forth the trolls and a lot of sad lefties who didn't understand that bankruptcy is a tool used by corporations to solve their financial problems and doesn't necessarily mean someone is going out of business (see Airlines to understand what I mean).

AAR has denied the bankrupcy rumors and is moving ahead with their new schedule in bits and pieces. Hopefully they will make an announcement about the new schedule on Friday. Here is what I've been able to figure out (all times are Eastern):

The Young Turks will fill the 6-9 am slot. Then Sam Seder will have a show from 9-12 (apparently with a new name). As near as I can tell Al Franken and Randi Rhodes will keep there existing time slots from 12-3 and 3-7 respectively. The 7-10 pm slot is unknown to me as is the 10-1 pm slot, but I suspect Rachel Maddow may have some part in one of those shows.

Jerry Springer and Mike Malloy are out.

No information on Thom Hartmann but I have heard nothing about him changing his status.

So, in conclusion, until we hear more I think we can assume that AAR will still be around. The Internet/XM schedule will change some. Local affiliates may dink with their schedules (my local AM station has already done that, a year ago, and has Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann in the morning; Ed Shultz in his live slot at noon, then Al Franken delayed in the 3-6 slot and Randi delayed in the 6-10 slot. Advertising on AAR

Based on my observations of AAR from the beginning and listening to most of the programming from the beginning, I think that restructuring and bankruptcy filing will be a good thing for AAR.

AAR is essentially a network, which doesn't own stations itself, but relies on local stations to carry its programming. National advertising is expensive for advertisers, and most of the advertising on the local stations is sold locally. A lot of XM advertising is generated by XM (again it's that national thing that is expensive).

I've always considered that many of the advertisers are "bottom feeders" who are akin to spam on the Internet. I suspect that many of them advertise on the conservative talk stations also.

The left blogosphere has done a much better job of attracting left advertising but it's probably related to the price.

At any rate, the new AAR lineup that is coming will probably work better on many stations. If we could just find out who will be on in the evening slots. . .

I can't believe I did it but i just did. In working to get ready to do some upgrades to the site, I just told Front Page to merge the Navigation structure for the Blog. It's possible that a bunch of posts were lost. However, I know the blog has been inactive for a long time (I have some sort of life) so it's possible I just haven't blogged here since last April.

Anyway, I will be blogging more, I think, as I get the site updated some and maybe get a little more time to blog.

We've been putting up with CNN News on your station for some time now. I
suppose you could argue that it allows us to find out what the other side
is up to, but the fact is that the slant on the news that CNN News provides
is not compatible with the listenership of this station. You need to be
carrying Air America News.

When I'm in my car, I often switch between the news feed on XM Channel 167
and your news feed, and they are offering entirely different news stories
and an entirely different approach to the News.

Unfortunately, when watching TV News, we are forced to put up with their
slant because it's the best we have (although if I really want News I have
to watch C-span for the raw feed or Democracy Now on Link-TV). But at
least their is a choice on AM radio and XM radio.

This email at this time is prompted by the report that someone had called
Al Gore a hypocrit because of actions that took place in the Aldritch Ames
case, which took place in the early 90's. A real News outlet might have
reported that remark, but should have pointed out that at the time the
searchs took place that they were legal; the law was changed by Congress a
couple of years later. Furthermore, Gore was only Vice President at the
time and had no control over the actions of the Justice Department, which
was under the leadership of the President.

My letter to Senator Murray:

Senator Murray,

It seems almost like old times to address Senator Murray, as the first Senator Murray I knew of was Senator James Murray from Montana and in 1952, as a 10 year old, I somehow got sucked into passing out handbills accusing him of being a "Red". Fortunately I grew up understanding the foolishness of that and becoming a strong Democrat and liberal. But now, as I approach retirement age, I see that we are again in a period like that Red-bating age, and I dispair that our democracy is on the verge of being lost.

As you may have figured out by now, this is a letter asking you to VOTE NO on John Roberts for the Supreme Court. As is obvious from the history that we do know of him, Roberts is much more conservative than we need on the SCOTUS at this time. And there are serious questions about the propriety of his ruling on issues involving the civil rights of prisoners at the time he was being considered for the Court by the Bush administration.

You have probably heard all the arguments so I won't belabor the point. But my opinion is that unless the Democrats stand firm and deliver a strong NO vote on Roberts, we will see continued submissions of conservatives by the Bush gang. Given their record of ignoring anything the Democrats do, there is nothing to be gained by cooperating with them.

Please Vote NO on Roberts.

Seattle Program Lineup Shuffling

KPTK-AM (1090) is shuffling its weekday lineup to emphasize West Coast hosts
beginning Monday. Stephanie Miller's Los Angeles-based show takes over the 6-9
a.m. slot currently held by "Morning Sedition," which moves to 3-5 a.m. Thom
Hartmann's show, originating in Portland, takes over the 9 a.m.-noon slot
currently held by Al Franken, who moves to 3-6 p.m. Ed Schultz stays at noon-3
p.m., while Randi Rhodes takes the 6-10 p.m. slot and Mike Malloy is heard 10
p.m.-1 a.m.

I guess it won't bother me too much since I have XM Radio, but at work I will have to listen to Thom in the morning, and download the podcast of Morning Secition.

I didn't believe this when I heard about it a couple of days ago but apparently it is true.
This isn't Air America but it is a vital part of the American Media picture.

Do what you need to do.

Dear Friend of KCTS,

On Thursday, June 9, a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee voted to cut federal funding of public broadcasting by 45 percent. If passed, KCTS will lose about $500,000 of our funding for our next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

This would also curtail funding for the national Ready To Learn initiative -- meaning decreases for Sesame Street, Arthur, Reading Rainbow, Between the Lions and many other children's television programs that teach critical reading and pre-reading skills to all children, including those who don't have cable television.

Additionally, it means many public television and radio stations will not have funds to replace deteriorating or outdated broadcasting equipment, possibly hindering our ability to bring you the high-quality programming you expect from public television.

If you are concerned about the future of locally owned and operated public media, you must act now. The full House of Representatives could take action on these cuts as soon as Wednesday, June 22.

I will reserve judgement as to whether Rachel is selling out. I suspect she is not and I hope that she will have a positive effect on the left-right dialog (which of course from my persepctive means she leads more righties to the left than Tucker and Severin lead to the right).

The Drudge Report allegation that the somewhat tasteless bit opening the April 25 Randi Rhodes show was being investigated by the Secret Service is slowly permeating the right blogosphere and the right internet press. I'll do an update with links later, but if you want to find out where it is going right now, goggle randi rhodes secret service.

The link to the clip on the Dridge site doesn't work, but the clip is actually still posted as of a few minutes ago. Follow our link to the White Rose Society and then Randi and then select the show for April 25.

I doubt that the clip was actually aimed at the President anyway--it actually combines a spoof of new Florida gun laws with the Social Security issue.

Voices from the Urban Archipelago - Left of the Dial comprising a short review of Left of the Dial in which the reviewers express surprise that Air America personalities expected there to be money available (based on the NPR model) and whining about the ads on both conservative and liberal talk radio.

My brain has generally learned to tune those pesky things out, although I have to admit that the single background tune used on several ads on my local AM station get somewhat annoying. And XM radio's ads for their other channels are, well, boring. I doubt that many America Left listeners actually are Nascar fans.

But the fact is that the advertising model works to finance talk radio, and the Public Radio model probably won't. Blogs seem to be able to use both models and maybe radio can too. But for right now it's the Advertising model that is being used.

The above article (slightly abridged in an irrelevant way) demonstrates what's wrong with our media in a non-political article. The Headline drew my attention because it referred to the "Deepest Cave" in the country. When I read the article I discovered that they were talking about the "deepest pit cave" which is a horse of a different color. And they they go on to talk about the "deepest known pit cave" being in Alaska, which might just be true depending on the definition, but in fact is not "The Deepest Cave" and is not even "the deepest pit" in a cave in the US.

So we have three different definitions all applied to the same thing, which mean completely different things: Deepest cave; deepest pit cave [in the country]; and deepest pit cave [known, presumably anywhere]. All of which are essentially wrong.

And this in a short throwaway paragraph on a TV News Channel.

How do you suppose they could ever get an abstract thing like Tom Delay's morality right?
